Meets on the first Wednesday of the month
We read one crime novel a month and argue about who did it.
A friendly club for people who like a body in the first chapter. We pick a book, meet to pull the plot apart, give it a score out of 10 and keep a running tally of every page we read.
How it works
- 1
Pick
Members take turns choosing the book. Any crime novel counts: whodunnit, noir, police procedural or true crime.
- 2
Read
You get a month. When the book goes on the shelf, its pages count once for every member who read it. Log any other crime novels you finish on the Reading log.
- 3
Meet and score
We talk it through, name the culprit and give the book a mark out of 10. The average, to one decimal place, goes on the Books read page.

Meetings
First Wednesday of the month, 7:30pm
Back room of The Crown. Food is served until 9pm and the quiz machine stays switched off.
Joining in
There are no fees and nothing to sign up for. Come to one meeting, then decide whether you want a turn at picking the book.
Questions we get asked
Do I have to finish the book?
No. Tell us how far you got and we'll keep the ending to ourselves until you say.
How do spoilers work?
We talk about the first half freely, then agree as a group when to name the culprit. Anyone who hasn't finished can ask for a pause.
How is the score decided?
Everyone marks the book out of 10. The club score is the average, to one decimal place.
How do I log my pages?
Club books are counted for you: when a book goes on the Books read page, its pages are multiplied by the number of members who read it. For other books, sign in with your member email and use the Reading log page. The pages go into the month you finished it.
